Holy shit! That was an incredible show! I caught the Toadies at the new music hall last night. Probably the best show I've been to in the last few years.
the music hall itself looks ok, but there are some sound issues with it. the second floor has really nasty acoustics. I feel sorry for the clowns who got VIP and were stationed up there. Since all the surfaces are hard and flat, the bass was bouncing all over the place and made for a very boomy, muddy mess. Hopefully the builders will fix the problem and add some insulation. the sweet spot of the first floor for me was towards the back under the second floor balcony. The balcony cuts out much of the boom and you can finally hear the rest of the band.
THE SHOW: Highlight of the night without a doubt was "Tyler". they played it 3 songs into the set and the crowd went crazy. It was like a singing a christmas carol or something. Everyone sang and it was clear enough to hear every word. Fucking amazing! Then the other songs like "Possum Kingdom, Burn, and others got similar treatment. It was like hanging out with 4000 of your best drunk friends.
At the end of the show there were 2 encores. the first was a 4 song micro set that included doll Skin, and Burn. Doll Skin has a special relevance to me because a few years back I wrote a screenplay titled, "Dementia". the lead character is on a set to shoot a music video and has a psychotic episode, leading to some grisly encounters. the song Doll skin's first stanza is very much in the spirit of the script.
Another highlight was during the procession out of the music hall. The vibrations of the sound stuck with me for probably another 20 minutes and I couldn't stop smiling. All in all, a pretty fucking glorious night. If you love anything about music you HAVE to see this band!

An Illustration a day
Ok, I've looked around on different artist sites and I want to give this a try. I'll be positng up a new illustration every couple of days. They will be mostly black and white, since it just takes too much time to color, and will be in a variety of styles. I'll also be revamping the douglasbrownartist.com site to try and make it a little cleaner.
All of these illustrations will be for sale. I'll try putting them on ebay and will have a link for the piece shortly. So what illustration is going up first?

The title is "Mic" and measures 11"x14". Enjoy bidding.

HEROES:Roadtrip
I put my paintbrush down to focus on another hobby/passion of mine: writing.
I've written a couple of screenplays in the past and entered them in competitions. I did fairly well.
Recently, I've gotten wrapped up in HEROES. I love the show, and decided to have some fun and create a fan fiction. Here is a brief description:
HEROES:Roadtrip
Jessica Sanders's mind is never at peace... and she's sick of it. When the promise of a "fix" to be rid of Nikki is presented to her, she jumps at the chance. The hitch: she needs Claire Bennett. What results is a cross-country journey of discovery, loyalty, friendship, and betrayal as Jessica delivers her payload into the hands of her mysterious savior; Sylar!

I'll be adding the story here in chunks. Stay tuned.

total defeat
Okay, where to start.
1. No one reads this fucking blog . I've been tracking it with statcounter and I've gotten 2 hits in the last month. Thanks guys, ( I think both of those hits were me).
2. I met a friend through mysoace who owns a bar called Canvas. He's an artist and really cool guy. He hosts live painting shows where the artists hanging on his walls create a painting while people drink and watch. Sounds good right? Well I thought so too, until I tried to be one of the artists. I've always known I painted slow. It takes on average a month for me to create a painting. Not a month working day and night, but basically another full time job. Anyway, he invited me to participate and i said yes. After all, I made one painting in a fury of color and line and everyone loves it, so I figure i could do it again. WRONG.
I have no one alse to blame for what happened today but me, which is why I feel so shitty. The week leading up to the event, I had it in my mind to prepare a canvas panel and get a sketch ready to transfer, build my palette so I wouldn't waste time mixing paint, and have my supplies ready to load in the car. WEeelll... my lazy ass kept finding delays and reasons not to until The day before. I got the sketch done no problem. It looked pretty good, which gave me a false sense of confidence. FRIDAY: need to assemble my canvas but first prime it. Priming takes at least an hour for a decent job if you sand between coats. Has to skip that step and ended up with a shitty warped surface. I didn't have time to build a frame which means the panel was very flimsy and shook when I was painting, so no clean lines. I transfered the image to baord, loaded everything and got to the bar with 30 minutes before opening. Good? kind of. I got set up but skipped dinner so I was fucking starving.
When I got to the bar and set up, I was placed right next to the speaker. this was fine until 9pm when they turned up the music. My ear is still ringing. On top of that, empty stomach + long island iced tea= quiziness. I just have to face facts. I'm a slow painter. i had a few people watch me for a while, and they got bored and left. I had the worst night of painting ever. Compostiion was good, but colors sucked and i want to destroy the painting. Seriously... I'm embarrassed for having made it.
